Australian Animals - Big Sky - banking where members benefit

  • Echidnas are mammals but they are unusual because they lay eggs. Mammals that lay eggs are called monotremes.
  • Their nose is very sensitive, they use this to find food, then they use their long sticky tongue to catch ants, worms and other such insects.
  • A young echidna is called a puggle
  • Spiders have oil on their bodies. This stops them sticking to their own webs
  • Platypuses can consume their own body weight in food in a 24 hour period!
  • The largest native Australian worm is the giant Gippsland earthworm. The longest worm on record was 4 m long!
  • Freshwater crocodiles swallow small stones and pebbles to help grind the food in their stomach. In large crocodiles, this weight also acts as a ballast.
