Our People

The old adage about an organisation only being as good as the people within it is certainly true for Big Sky. Over its 40 year history the organisation has benefitted from the talent and dedication of a small army of people scattered throughout Australia. From the initial voluntary workforce, like David Gray, through to current day stalwarts like Tony Perry, together with the members, the people of Big Sky have made it the organisation it is today.

David Gray

When BHP asked one of its young employees back in 1971 to go to Newcastle and Port Kembla to "find out about co-operatives" they set in chain a series of events that led to the formation of the BHP Employees Credit Co-operative, the founding entity of today’s Big Sky. Today that individual, David Gray, remains a committed member of the organisation, a true fan of the co-operative or mutual model; "people helping each other out is what its all about", and is pleased Big Sky has stayed true to the core values of the organisation he founded. Of the many memories David has of this time the painstaking manual calculation of interest on every loan and deposit has remained with him to this day. David has also retained his allegiance to the co-operative and subsequently Big Sky and like many others he introduced members of his immediate and extended family to the mutual and today all remain committed Big Sky customers.

Grant Williams

Another employee who can lay claim to being involved in the organisation for 40 years is the recent retired Grant Williams. Over the course of the four decades with the organisation Grant fulfilled a variety of different roles since starting out as a clerk back in 1971. These included spending a period of time managing the Western Port Service Centre, then working in an Operations Manager role and more recently Grant managed Business Development for Big Sky for a number of years. Of his time with the organisation Grant said "I very much enjoyed my time with BHP and Big Sky and dealing with the membership and staff. I am grateful for the opportunities presented to me over the years, especially the ability to visit and meet members and employees at numerous employer locations around Australia".

Tony Perry and Raelene Johns (Hubber)

Since starting out together with the BP Employee’s Credit Co-Operative in 1987 Tony and Raelene have shared more hours working together than they care to remember. “We’d both hate to think how many hours that might amount to!’ says Tony, nowadays Manager of the Service Centre at the BP Refinery in Kwinana. Whilst he and Raelene still work out of the same location, Raelene’s duties managing the four Service Centres in WA and one in SA mean she is on the road for a large part of any given week. Tony’s longevity at the Refinery has meant he’s had the pleasure of serving generations of members from the same family; “I’ve really enjoyed being able to help the kids of some of the original members and now even some of their kid’s kids are coming in – that’s a bit scary!”. With her focus on Big Sky’s community banking offering in regional areas such as Hedland, Newman and Roxby Downs, Raelene gets a kick out of seeing the locals in these areas respond to the Big Sky offering; “it’s really pleasing when you see a family or a business come on board”.
