General and Property tips:
|
- Wash your car, boat or caravan with a soapy bucket and sponge – only use the hose for a final rinse.
- Wash the car on the lawn – the lawn will get a watering at the same time.

- Go to a commercial carwash that uses water efficiently and disposes of the water properly.
- Use a watering can, not the hose. If you do use a hose, get one with a trigger nozzle.
- Install a drip irrigation system. A dripper system uses 4 litres per dripper per hour compared to 1,000 litres per hour for a sprinkler.
- Water plant roots, not leaves.
- Install water tanks to collect rainwater – use it on the garden.
- Don’t over–water your garden. Over–watering can increase the leaching of fertilisers to ground water.
- Water garden plants less often to encourage deeper root growth.
- Select plants that have low requirements for water, fertilisers and pesticides.
- Install timers on garden taps.
- Sweep garden paths with a broom – don’t use the hose.
- Aerate the lawn to allow water to be absorbed more easily
- Grow drought resistant lawn varieties.
- Don’t worry about watering the lawn in summer - it will revive when the rain returns.
- Minimise lawns or grassed areas that require more maintenance.
- Use good mulch – mulches can save up to 73% evaporation. Make a compost heap.
- Compost in your garden helps retain soil moisture, so you need to water less.
- Cover the swimming pool to reduce evaporation, retain warmth and keep out leaves. Up to 200 litres can be lost from a swimming pool through evaporation.
- Dig gravelled trenches along driveways or patios to collect water and allow it to filter into the ground.
